Scientific name : Phedina borbonica

Mascarene Martin (Phedina borbonica) – Small but lively, this elegant martin enlivens the ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel, located right next to Antananarivo Airport.

What does it look like?

This small bird, about 15 cm long, has a dark grayish-brown back, a light belly streaked with black, a white throat, and a slightly forked tail edged with white.

Its song or cry

The Mascarene Martin produces a distinctive song, a melodious “siri-liri siri-liri.” Some notes end with a glissando, while the young emit a rapid, impatient chirping.

An anecdote or fun fact

Did you know that this martin can build its nest in the most unexpected places? Roofs, building walls, ledges... It adapts very well to human presence, as long as it can find a sheltered spot up high.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

You’re most likely to spot it at dawn or late in the day, when it flies over the bushes or approaches the lodge to hunt insects. During the breeding season, its comings and goings become especially frequent.

Why does he love our garden?

The ornithological garden has everything it needs. It offers a variety of perches: wires, buildings, wooded areas. It attracts an abundance of flying insects—perfect for the diet of Phedina borbonica, which enjoys hunting low and in groups.

Tips for observing it

To observe the Mascarene Martin, sit quietly near the low branches or on a bench at the lodge. Stay discreet and still, as it often flies low over the garden. Don’t forget your binoculars—with its fast and agile flight, it can easily slip out of sight!
