Ward’s flycatcher (Pseudobias wardi) – This small, charismatic bird with contrasting plumage explores the treetops of our beautifully planted ornitholodical garden, located next to Antananarivo International Airport, within the Au Bois Vert lodge-hotel-restaurant in Ivato.
What does it look like?
The Ward’s flycatcher features glossy black plumage, a broad white band across its wings and under the chest, and a spotless white belly. It has a delicate pale blue eye-ring and an elegant tail, all within a compact size of about 15 cm.
Its song or cry
It produces dry, metallic trills, often descending “pttttt” sounds repeated every 2–3 seconds, sometimes followed by a faster “pt-chichichichi.” Its calls stand out clearly in the forest, making it easier to locate.
An anecdote or fun fact
This remarkable bird is the sole representative of the genus Pseudobias, a rare distinction that fascinates ornithologists and delights our visitors.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
The Ward’s flycatcher is most often spotted early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it becomes very active around the lodge. It favors forest edges and open areas near the restaurant, from where it launches off prominent perches to catch its prey.
Why does he love our garden?
With its native trees and proximity to forested areas, the Au Bois Vert garden provides an ideal habitat for Pseudobias wardi. The environment is rich in insects, ensuring a steady food supply, and the peaceful surroundings near the hotel support the species' regular presence.
Tips for observing it
Bring binoculars and take the time to listen. The Ward’s flycatcher is often detected by its short, dry trills, emitted from the canopy. To catch a glimpse of it, quietly settle in the shade near the forest edges along the lodge pathway. Calm and patience are your best allies for observing this discreet bird.
