Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides) – Elegant and discreet, this small heron adds to the charm of the ornithological garden at the Au Bois Vert lodge in Ivato, near Antananarivo International Airport!
What does it look like?
The Squacco Heron displays a creamy beige, almost golden plumage, while its wings appear white when it takes flight. During the breeding season, it adorns itself with an elegant mane of light brown and white plumes. Its bill turns turquoise blue, its legs bright orange, and its yellow eyes stand out clearly.
Its song or cry
Usually silent, the Squacco Heron lets out a low “kruuk,” a soft “kok,” or even a sharp “kahk” when taking flight or if it feels disturbed.
An anecdote or fun fact
During the breeding season, the Squacco Heron takes on a striking appearance: its bill temporarily turns a vivid turquoise blue. Another remarkable behavior is its habit of spreading its wings over the water to create a shaded area — a clever technique that helps it spot prey more easily.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
You can spot the Squacco Heron early in the morning or late in the afternoon, near the ponds and wetlands of the lodge. During migration season, it stays here between October and March.
Why does he love our garden?
The ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel-restaurant offers wetlands rich in fish, frogs, and insects. This calm and diverse environment is especially attractive to the Squacco Heron.
Tips for observing it
The best time to observe the Squacco Heron is early in the morning or late in the day. Approach the water points slowly and remain still. A pair of binoculars will allow you to admire its breeding plumage without disturbing it.
