Souimanga Sunbird (Cinnyris sovimanga) – This little living ray of sunshine brightens up the ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel-restaurant in Ivato, just a stone’s throw from Antananarivo International Airport!
What does it look like?
The Souimanga Sunbird (Cinnyris sovimanga) is a very small bird, about 10 cm long. The male is distinguished by its vibrant colors: a metallic green head and back, a black throat bordered by a bright red band, a yellow belly, and brown wings and tail. The female, more discreet in appearance, has grayish-brown plumage with a pale yellow belly.
Its song or cry
The male produces a rapid, slightly raspy song, often repeated. In flight, the Souimanga Sunbird emits a sharp “tchip tchip” sound, accompanied by a harsh, powerful alarm call that does not go unnoticed.
An anecdote or fun fact
During courtship display, the male raises his wings to reveal small yellow tufts on the sides of his chest. This charming performance catches the attention of visitors, whether from the restaurant or the lodge!
Where and when to see it in our garden?
Cinnyris sovimanga can be observed at dawn and dusk in the heart of the Au Bois Vert ornithological garden. It frequents the tropical flowers planted near the lodge and around the restaurant terrace, especially during the rainy season (from October to March).
Why does he love our garden?
The hotel’s botanical garden overflows with nectar-rich flowers (hibiscus, aloes, proteas) specially selected to attract birds. The Souimanga Sunbird finds everything it needs there: food, shelter, and quiet spots for nesting.
Tips for observing it
To get a chance to see it up close, quietly settle near the flowering bushes early in the morning or late in the afternoon. A pair of binoculars will be helpful, but most importantly, remain silent and patient. With a bit of calm, you’ll be able to admire it perfectly—and it might even come to you.
