The rock pigeon (Columba livia) – Easy to spot and well known to all, this bird has integrated perfectly into our ornithological garden, between nature and the city, in the heart of Ivato!
What does it look like?
Of medium size, the Rock Pigeon has bluish-gray plumage with two black bars on its wings. Its neck can show green and purple iridescence depending on the light. Its bright orange eye and black beak stand out elegantly against its sturdy frame.
Its song or cry
The Rock Pigeon produces soft cooing sounds, often in sequences — “coo-coooo” — especially during courtship displays or to mark its territory. These gentle calls create a peaceful atmosphere around the lodge, just a few steps from the airport.
An anecdote or fun fact
Did you know that the Rock Pigeon is the ancestor of all domestic pigeons? Thanks to its exceptional navigational abilities, it was long used as a messenger during wars.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
Present year-round, it can be seen early in the morning or late in the afternoon, on the paved paths or the edges of the restaurant and lodge rooftops. It also enjoys perching on low branches or pecking at the ground.
Why does he love our garden?
The Bois Vert Ornithological Garden offers a perfect blend of structures and vegetation. The tranquility of the area, combined with its proximity to the restaurant and lodge, provides a safe environment for the Rock Pigeon while giving it access to plenty of resources.
Tips for observing it
It is quite easy to observe. Approach slowly or use binoculars, and avoid sudden movements. From the terrace or the restaurant, you will often see it flying by just a few meters away.
