Red Fody
Common name : Red FodyeBird ebird
Scientific name : Foudia madagascariensis

The Red Fody (Foudia madagascariensis) – Don’t be fooled by its small size: this little scarlet bird is one of the greatest charmers in the ornithological garden at the Au Bois Vert hotel in Ivato!

What does it look like?

The male is distinguished by its bright red plumage, with dark brown wings and tail, as well as a black outline around the eyes. The female, more subdued in appearance, has an olive-brown hue. Both measure approximately 12 cm in length and weigh between 14 and 19 grams.

Its song or cry

The song of the Red Fody consists of clear, repeated notes, often described as metallic "tweets." It sometimes uses them in trills to mark its territory. Its alarm call, sharper and faster, is used to signal danger.

An anecdote or fun fact

During the rainy season, from December to March, the male dons his bright red plumage to attract females. He builds several nests in the garden and sometimes abandons one right after the eggs are laid to start building another — sometimes even in the same tree.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

You have a good chance of spotting the Red Fody early in the morning, near the hedges and bushes around the lodge and the restaurant. During the breeding season, between December and March, its bright red plumage makes it especially easy to spot.

Why does he love our garden?

The Au Bois Vert Ornithological Garden provides the Red Fody with an ideal environment: open spaces, shrubs, an abundance of seeds and insects... everything it needs to feed, hide, and raise its young in peace.

Tips for observing it

Wear neutral-colored clothing and move slowly, just after sunrise, toward the bushes around the restaurant. With binoculars, you'll have a better chance of spotting the Red Fody. This bird is quick and can vanish as suddenly as it appears.
