Small and elegant, the Namaqua Dove (Oena capensis) is easy to recognize by its long, slender tail. It discreetly adds its grace to the ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert lodge in Ivato, not far from Antananarivo airport.
What does it look like?
This small columbid has pinkish-grey plumage and a striking dark mask that covers its eyes. Its brown wings, slender body, and long, tapered tail make it an instantly recognizable species.

You can observe it at dawn or late in the afternoon, on the lower branches of the trees surrounding our restaurant Au Bois Vert in Ivato. It enjoys the tranquility of the ornithological garden, especially outside of mealtime hours.

The Namaqua Dove finds here an abundance of small seeds, a peaceful habitat, and trees well suited to its discreet behavior. The location near the international airport also offers a variety of open spaces that it enjoys.
