Meller’s Duck
Common name : Meller's DuckeBird ebird
Scientific name : Anas melleri

Meller’s Duck (Anas melleri) – This elegant Malagasy waterfowl draws admiration with its dark silhouette and its appearance that is both delicate and robust — a true gem of the ornithological garden at the Hotel Bois Vert!

What does it look like?

The Meller’s Duck has dark brown plumage streaked with fine cream stripes, a broad pale gray bill, and bright orange legs. It measures about 55 cm, making it a duck slightly larger than a mallard.

Its song or cry

The Meller’s Duck produces deep, hoarse grunts, almost guttural, usually quiet except during the breeding season. When paired, it can be heard softly yelping in response to its mate.

An anecdote or fun fact

Fairly territorial, the Meller’s Duck remains faithful to its partner until the ducklings become independent. It defends its territory vigorously: you might see it chase away any intruders with wing strikes.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

It is mainly seen at dawn and late in the day, near the lagoon of our ornithological garden. The best time to spot it is early in the morning, when it glides silently across the pond, in the shade of the palm trees.

Why does he love our garden?

Our hotel-restaurant, located in Ivato near Antananarivo International Airport, offers a calm and humid environment. The natural banks and diverse vegetation attract the Meller’s Duck, which seeks quiet and secure habitats.

Tips for observing it

Equip yourself with binoculars and settle quietly on the wooden footbridge, keeping a good distance. Silence is essential: the slightest noise can scare it away.
