Malagasy white-eye (Zosterops maderaspatanus) – A small burst of nature in the ornithological garden of our hotel, restaurant, and lodge Au Bois Vert, this curious migrant enchants the mornings with its bright gaze and crystalline songs, very close to Antananarivo International Airport.
What does it look like?
The Malagasy White-eye is a small, stocky bird about 10 cm long. It has greenish-yellow plumage with a paler chest. Its most distinctive feature is a striking white ring around its eyes, which contrasts nicely with its small, dark, slender beak.
Its song or cry
This little bird can be heard singing a soft, rhythmic, and crystalline song, resembling a series of light trills. When in groups, their subtle "tchip-tchip" calls can also be heard, exchanged like brief signals.
An anecdote or fun fact
The white ring around its eye has earned it the nickname "spectacled bird." In fact, this distinctive visual feature may help it recognize its fellow birds—a kind of natural signature!
Where and when to see it in our garden?
The Malagasy White-eye appears at the first light of day. It is often spotted in the bushes or perched high in the trees, especially behind the restaurant. It seems to favor the northeast side of the garden, near the hotel entrance.
Why does he love our garden?
The mixed hedges in the garden, the flowering trees, and the peaceful surroundings of the lodge create an ideal habitat for this small songbird.
Tips for observing it
This little bird is constantly on the move! To observe it properly, stay quiet near the bushes and use compact binoculars. The area around the restaurant often offers a good view when it comes to forage or rest for a moment in the nearby trees.
