Madagascar turtle dove (Nesoenas picturatus) – This elegant, endemic dove is a regular visitor to the ornithological garden at Lodge Au Bois Vert, just a stone’s throw from Antananarivo airport.

What does it look like?

The Madagascar Turtle Dove displays a lovely warm brown plumage on its back, wings with reddish highlights, and a paler belly. Its pale grey head accentuates its red-ringed eyes, which easily draw attention. It measures around 28 cm and has a stocky build perched on slender legs.

Its song or cry

The Madagascar Turtle Dove emits a deep, steady cooing sound, which can be heard both when it is perched and in flight. Its typical call, a gentle “roo-roo-roo,” is soft yet soothing. It sometimes adds an even softer “coo-oo,” which blends perfectly with the peaceful atmosphere of the garden.

An anecdote or fun fact

It is often mistaken for a dove, but the Madagascar Turtle Dove is not one! Its closest relative is the Pink Pigeon of Mauritius. Together, they form a distinct genus: Nesoenas, unique among the pigeons of the Indian Ocean.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

You can observe it throughout the day, starting at sunrise, in the trees around the restaurant or near the lodge. It also comes early, even during service hours. The best times? In the morning, when the first visitors arrive at the bird garden.

Why does he love our garden?

The Madagascar Turtle Dove is especially fond of the rich plant life in the Au Bois Vert garden, where it finds an abundance of seeds, berries, and small fruits. Despite the proximity of the airport, the peaceful setting around the lodge and restaurant provides it with a calm and welcoming refuge.

Tips for observing it

To observe the Madagascar Turtle Dove, sit quietly near the restaurant or under the trees. Avoid sudden movements and remain discreet, as it is easily startled. Dry mornings are ideal: its call is more audible, and it appears more frequently.
