Madagascar Sunbird
Common name : Madagascar SunbirdeBird ebird
Scientific name : Cinnyris notatus

Madagascar Sunbird (Cinnyris notatus) – Bright, colorful, and tireless, this tiny nectar feeder enlivens the blooming flowers of the ornithological garden at the lodge Au Bois Vert, near the international airport, just outside Antananarivo.

What does it look like?

The male Madagascar Sunbird catches the eye with its shimmering metallic green plumage, contrasted by a pale yellow belly and a slender, delicately curved beak. The female, more discreet, is characterized by duller colors: a brownish-gray back and a soft yellow-olive belly.

Its song or cry

The Madagascar Sunbird sings with a rapid, slightly scratchy voice, often accompanied by short, harsh alarm calls. In flight, it also emits brief, cheerful chirps that reveal its presence as it feeds on flowers.

An anecdote or fun fact

This little bird is remarkable for its agility: it often hovers while feeding, much like a hummingbird. During the breeding season, the males display their pretty yellow chest feathers to attract females, creating a delightful scene in our garden.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

Active at dawn and late in the afternoon, this small bird is easily spotted around nectar-rich flowers, especially near the restaurant and the garden’s flower-lined paths.

Why does he love our garden?

The garden of Au Bois Vert is filled with carefully tended tropical flowers, rich in nectar and tiny insects. A true little paradise for the sunbird, which finds both food and a peaceful space to move about safely.

Tips for observing it

To spot the sunbird, there's nothing better than sitting quietly near the flowers. Although it is often visible, it remains cautious. A bit of silence and patience is all it takes to catch a glimpse.
