Madagascar paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone mutata) – With its long tail feathers and elegant appearance, the Madagascar paradise flycatcher is a true eye-catcher in the ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel-restaurant!
What does it look like?
The Madagascar paradise flycatcher displays distinct plumage depending on the sex: the female, with her rufous-brown tones, has a dark and elegant head, while the male stands out with his white feathers and, most notably, his spectacularly long tail. The bird measures about 18 cm, but in males, the tail can double this length.
Its song or cry
This Terpsiphone mutata produces clear whistles and sharp, sometimes rapid, notes. Its high-pitched call, though brief, cuts through the forest and echoes beyond the lodge.
An anecdote or fun fact
During the nesting period, the pair builds a cup-shaped nest and then fiercely defends the site: the female incubates the eggs while the male keeps watch.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
You can observe the Madagascar paradise flycatcher at dawn, in the heart of the bird garden near Antananarivo International Airport. It often appears in the wooded areas of the Au Bois Vert lodge between September and January, during the nesting season.
Why does he love our garden?
Thanks to its tall trees, flowering shrubs, and preserved biodiversity, the garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel naturally attracts the Madagascar paradise flycatcher. It hunts freely here and is often visible from the lodges.
Tips for observing it
To maximize your chances, settle in early in the morning in a quiet spot near the lodge, and remain discreet. Wear dark clothing and bring binoculars — the long-tailed males are often spotted perched, keeping watch over their territory. Avoid busy areas, as the paradise flycatcher prefers peace and quiet.
