Scientific name : Caprimulgus madagascariensis

Madagascar Nightjar (Caprimulgus madagascariensis) – In the ornithological garden of the Hotel Au Bois Vert, near Antananarivo’s international airport in Ivato, this discreet nocturnal bird enchants the evenings.

What does it look like?

The Madagascar Nightjar has gray-brown plumage with small yellow spots, which helps it blend well with the ground during the day. It has a round head, a small beak, and reddish eyes, giving it a mysterious appearance. It measures between 25 and 28 cm.

Its song or cry

The Caprimulgus madagascariensis sings at dusk and during the night. Its song is a soft and steady trill, almost like a gentle purring. This calming sound fits well with the peaceful atmosphere of our hotel-lodge.

An anecdote or fun fact

Did you know that the Madagascar Nightjar hunts by flying close to the ground? It catches insects flying above the flowers, especially near the restaurant where the light attracts them.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

You can often see the Caprimulgus madagascariensis in the evening, between 6:30 and 8:00 PM, flying slowly near the tall trees along the restaurant terrace.

Why does he love our garden?

Our ornithological garden offers shaded areas for resting during the day and soft lights at night that attract insects, its favorite prey.

Tips for observing it

To have a chance to see it, use a red light and move slowly along the garden, without using a flash. It’s best to settle quietly near the lodge or hotel terrace, then listen carefully: its song will help you locate it.
