Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) – With its slender silhouette, bright white plumage, and graceful gait, it embodies elegance among the birds in our ornithological garden.. Discreet but remarkable, this tall wading bird draws attention, especially near the wetlands around the lodge and the restaurant of Au Bois Vert.
What does it look like?
The little egret is distinguished by its bright white plumage, long black legs, and vivid yellow feet. Its slender neck and two delicate ornamental plumes at the back of its head enhance its presence. Slim and graceful, it measures about 60 cm in height with a wingspan of 90 to 100 cm.
Its song or cry
Discreet, this egret rarely vocalizes. Its call is a short, rough, and raspy croak, often heard in flight or during territorial disputes. Its relative calm allows guests at the restaurant or lodge to observe it without interruption.
An anecdote or fun fact
In the past, its long breeding plumes were highly sought after to adorn women’s hats, which nearly drove the species to extinction! Today protected, the little egret represents the renewed beauty of nature in gardens like Au Bois Vert.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
Present year-round in our ornithological garden, the egret frequents the banks of the small pond located between the restaurant and the bungalows. The best times to observe it are in the morning, between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and in the late afternoon.
Why does he love our garden?
The garden offers an ideal ecosystem: wetlands, dense vegetation, and tranquility. The proximity of Antananarivo International Airport does not affect its presence, as it finds food and shelter there. It also appreciates the biodiversity of the Ivato region.
Tips for observing it
Move slowly and stay quiet. The best place to observe it is from the lodge terrace or discreetly from the paths in the ornithological garden. A pair of binoculars and a bit of patience will allow you to see it fishing.
