Knob-billed Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos) – This elegant duck, with its broad bill and the distinctive cranial knob in males, adds a touch of the exotic to the ornithological garden of our Au Bois Vert lodge!
What does it look like?
This bird measures about 56 cm and has white plumage with black markings. The male features a bony knob on its bill. The female has a slimmer bill and a smoother neck, while still displaying the same contrasting black and white pattern.
Its song or cry
The Sarkidiornis melanotos produces a rough gurgling call, made up of deep, guttural sounds. In flight, it emits a loud “gu-gouu” that is easily recognizable, especially around Antananarivo International Airport.
An anecdote or fun fact
When excited, the male knob-billed duck inflates its throat and the large knob on its bill. It’s both amusing to watch and truly spectacular!
Where and when to see it in our garden?
It can be seen at dawn on the ponds of the ornithological garden, especially between November and March, during the warm season. This is when it comes to nest and enjoy the calm of the banks.
Why does he love our garden?
It loves quiet, wet places. Here, it finds water to swim in, plants to hide among, and plenty of insects and seeds to eat. It’s the perfect spot to build its nest!
Tips for observing it
To maximize your chances of observing the knob-billed duck, go out in the early morning hours. The low-angle light reveals the male’s stunning emerald sheen and the prominent black knob on its bill. Settle quietly near a water point, use binoculars, and avoid sudden movements — it’s a very alert bird, especially when it senses it’s being watched.
