Humblot’s Heron
Common name : Humblot's HeroneBird ebird
Scientific name : Ardea humbloti

Humblot’s Heron (Ardea humbloti) – Rare and elegant, this iconic heron from Mozambique to Madagascar finds refuge in our ornithological garden, bringing a touch of wild nature to our hotel-lodge located near Antananarivo International Airport!

What does it look like?

This large heron, measuring between 92 and 100 cm, is distinguished by its uniform grey plumage, which is darker on the head and features a black chin. It has a broad pale yellow bill, brownish-grey legs, and a small, subtle crest on its head that makes it easily recognizable.

Its song or cry

Its call is a deep “karr,” similar to that of the Grey Heron, sometimes uttered in flight. Near the nest, a characteristic bill-clattering sound can also be heard.

An anecdote or fun fact

Did you know that the Humblot’s Heron can catch eels twice as long as its beak? This exceptional fisher can remain perfectly still for hours before striking its prey with remarkable precision.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

It can be observed from dawn and again in the late afternoon near water sources, particularly around the marshes and landscaped banks of the hotel's ornithological garden. The lodge has well-positioned observation points that allow you to spot it without disturbing it.

Why does he love our garden?

The combination of shallow wetlands, fish-rich ponds, and the peaceful atmosphere typical of our garden-restaurant attracts this heron in search of calm and hearty meals.

Tips for observing it

Use the designated paths to approach without causing disturbance. Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens. Stay calm, avoid sudden movements, and set your devices to silent mode.
