Great Egret (Ardea alba) – With its slender silhouette and immaculate plumage, it adds a touch of nobility to the ornithological garden of the hotel-restaurant Au Bois Vert, just a stone’s throw from Antananarivo International Airport.
What does it look like?
The Great Egret is a large, elegant bird with entirely white plumage. It has a long, slender, straight yellow beak and long grey-green legs. Its graceful silhouette gives the impression that it is gently dancing by the water’s edge. You can admire it in all its splendor in our Ornithological Garden, Au Bois Vert, in Ivato.
Its song or cry
It lets out deep, hoarse croaks, especially in flight or during mating. Its raspy call—a prolonged “kroik”—can be heard subtly near the lodge or the restaurant, adding a touch of wilderness to the peaceful setting.
An anecdote or fun fact
During nesting season, the Great Egret develops long, decorative feathers known as aigrettes. Once highly prized in the fashion industry, these elegant plumes nearly led to the species’ decline. Today, the egret displays them proudly and safely in the Ornithological Garden.
Where and when to see it in our garden?
You’ll easily spot the Great Egret near the water, especially at dawn and late in the afternoon. These quiet moments offer the best chances to observe it hunting.
Why does he love our garden?
Our ponds are teeming with small fish, insects, and amphibians. This rich ecosystem attracts the bird, offering it a safe and nourishing haven just steps away from Antananarivo International Airport.
Tips for observing it
Walk slowly along the bamboo path. Bring binoculars or a camera with a quiet zoom. Choose calm moments of the day to avoid disturbing it. If you remain silent and still, you’ll have every chance of spotting it.
