Forest fody
Common name : Forest fodyeBird ebird
Scientific name : Foudia omissa

Forest fody (Foudia omissa) – This small Malagasy songbird captivates the eye with its bright plumage and lively presence in the ornithological garden of the hotel-restaurant Au Bois Vert in Ivato, near Antananarivo International Airport.

What does it look like?

In the adult male, the Forest Fody is distinguished by its bright reddish plumage, with a slightly darker head. The female, more discreet, displays light brown tones. Its stocky body and conical beak give it a simple yet elegant silhouette.

Its song or cry

This small passerine sings a high-pitched, rhythmic, and repetitive chirping, made up of "tchi-tchi-tchi" sounds. Its light song often echoes through the paths of the lodge, especially in the early morning.

An anecdote or fun fact

The Foudia omissa is a true little architect: it weaves cup-shaped nests from flexible plant fibers. The females, full of surprises, don’t hesitate to place these tiny masterpieces in unusual spots—sometimes just under the rooftops, only steps away from the restaurant!

Where and when to see it in our garden?

It is most often seen in the early morning, between June and February, in the eucalyptus groves and around the ornithological garden near the restaurant and lodge of the Au Bois Vert hotel in Ivato, just a stone's throw from Antananarivo International Airport.

Why does he love our garden?

The Forest Fody is fond of semi-wooded areas and finds around the lodge plenty of trees perfect for building its nests. The garden also offers a wide variety of seeds and insects—just what it needs to feed on.

Tips for observing it

Arrive as early as 6 a.m. with a discreet pair of binoculars and settle quietly near the restaurant or at the edge of the groves. Stay still and silent—it often takes just a few minutes before you hear the song of the Foudia omissa and see it hopping from branch to branch.
