Common name : Common jeryeBird ebird
Scientific name : Neomixis tenella

The Common jery (Neomixis tenella) – A small, discreet yet charming songbird that brightens the ornithological garden of the Au Bois Vert hotel-restaurant in Ivato.

What does it look like?

This small bird, which measures less than 12 cm, has plumage ranging from beige to light gray, with a slightly paler throat. It has a sturdy beak and bright, alert eyes. Its slender body allows it to move easily among the branches.

Its song or cry

The Common jery produces a high-pitched, repetitive song, often described as a rapid and steady "tsee-zee tsee-zee." It can be heard from the early hours of the day, especially as it moves among the garden ferns.

An anecdote or fun fact

The Common jery enjoys searching for insects by rummaging through the lower branches, and it sometimes even hangs upside down to catch its prey. A charming sight that often catches the attention of lodge visitors.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

You can spot the Neomixis tenella early in the morning in the thickets near the restaurant, especially between September and April. It favors the shaded undergrowth near the international airport but also wanders near the lodge in the late afternoon.

Why does he love our garden?

With its dense hedges, shrubs, and numerous ferns, our garden provides the Common jery with a perfect environment to live in: it offers plenty of food and a quiet place to build its nest.

Tips for observing it

To have a chance of observing it, dress discreetly and slowly approach the shaded areas. Avoid making noise, especially near the hotel terrace. The best option is to settle near the bushes before dawn, with a good pair of binoculars: this small, lively, and elusive bird is often on the move.
