Cattle Egret (Ardea ibis) – a small, easily recognizable white heron, often seen in the ornithological garden of our hotel-restaurant Au Bois Vert in Ivato!

What does it look like?

The Cattle Egret (Ardea ibis) has bluish-grey plumage, white-edged wings, and a long nape. Its bright yellow beak and long legs give it a slender, elegant silhouette, making it easy to spot in our ornithological garden.

Its song or cry

This heron lets out a harsh, powerful call — a strident "krawk" — heard when it takes flight or warns its companions. This call, often repeated, can carry over long distances, especially at dawn or dusk.

An anecdote or fun fact

At Bois Vert, it’s not uncommon to see Cattle Egrets calmly walking near the restaurant’s guests.

Where and when to see it in our garden?

The best time to observe the Cattle Egret (Ardea ibis) is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, near the bodies of water around the lodge. It is especially fond of shaded riverbanks.

Why does he love our garden?

The Cattle Egret enjoys our garden because it offers calm water, plenty of insects, and a peaceful environment. The lodge and the Au Bois Vert hotel-restaurant cause little disturbance, allowing the bird to feed and rest in peace.

Tips for observing it

To observe this heron in good conditions, settle quietly near the ponds with binoculars. Stay still, be patient, and position yourself to the left: the morning light will highlight the sheen of its plumage.
