Black Heron
Common name : Black HeroneBird ebird
Scientific name : Egretta ardesiaca

Don’t be fooled by its dark plumage: the Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca) puts on a true spectacle at the Au Bois Vert ornithological garden, just near Antananarivo Airport, delighting visitors to the lodge, hotel, and restaurant.

What does it look like?

Egretta ardesiaca has glossy black plumage with blue-grey hues. It measures between 43 and 66 cm in length, with a black bill, bright yellow legs, and a slender crest on its head, characteristic of the species.

Its song or cry

The Black Heron is generally quiet. It occasionally lets out a harsh, short call when disturbed. Most of the time, it flies and hunts in silence, discreet in the peaceful garden near Ivato.

An anecdote or fun fact

To fish, the Black Heron spreads its wings like a real umbrella. This creates shade over the water, attracting fish and small animals toward it. A fascinating sight to watch right in front of our restaurant!

Where and when to see it in our garden?

It is most often seen in the late afternoon, by the sheltered pond near the hotel. It is especially present during the rainy season, from November to April — right around dinnertime!

Why does he love our garden?

The ornithological garden at Au Bois Vert provides an ideal setting for the Black Heron: calm wetlands, shallow ponds, and golden light reminiscent of its natural habitat. It finds everything it loves there — prey, tranquility, and plenty of space.

Tips for observing it

To maximize your chances, bring a pair of binoculars and approach slowly, avoiding sudden movements. The best time to spot it is around sunset, when it becomes more active. Settle quietly near the water, on the vegetation side, between the restaurant and the lodge — an ideal spot to observe it without disturbing it.
