The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) – This nocturnal heron, discreet yet elegant, glides through the shadows of the Au Bois Vert ornithological garden in Ivato, adding an aura of mystery to our lodge.
What does it look like?
The Black-crowned Night Heron is recognizable by its slate-gray plumage, compact body, and piercing red eyes. It wears a black cap on its head, and when it takes flight, its movement is slow, smooth, and almost silent.
Its song or cry
In general, the Black-crowned Night Heron emits harsh, repetitive "oo-ouk" calls, especially at nightfall. This deep, slightly hoarse cry echoes through the reeds and marshes of our lodge.
An anecdote or fun fact
Did you know that the Black-crowned Night Heron can remain motionless for hours, patiently watching for its prey? It also hunts at night, which is why it’s called Nycticorax—the “night raven”!
Where and when to see it in our garden?
It is most often seen at dusk or at dawn, near the garden’s natural water feature. Located in Ivato, just steps from Antananarivo International Airport, our ornithological garden offers easy access to enjoy these special moments.
Why does he love our garden?
The Black-crowned Night Heron is drawn to the quiet banks and wetlands of the garden. The carefully landscaped environment around the Au Bois Vert hotel and restaurant provides it with an ideal pantry, rich in insects, small fish, and frogs.
Tips for observing it
Settle quietly by the water’s edge, preferably early in the morning near the lodge, and remain silent. A pair of binoculars will help you observe it more closely. Avoid using flash, so as not to disturb it—especially in low light, when it is most active.
