Serissa foetida or Snowrose in flower

Serissa foetida, commonly known as “Snowrose“, is a striking ornamental shrub. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly China and Japan, it is easily recognised by its delicate white flowers that blanket the shrub in summer, creating a stunning snow-like effect. This natural beauty makes it a popular choice for botanical gardens such as Au Bois Vert in Antananarivo.

Typically reaching a height of 50 to 60 centimetres, Serissa foetida features small, evergreen leaves that are elliptical in shape with a slightly rough texture. Beyond its flowering season, which lasts from May to September, the plant remains attractive thanks to its dense, lush foliage that enhances the garden’s appearance throughout the year.

To thrive, Snowrose requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It does best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This hardy plant is also capable of withstanding dry spells, making it well suited to the varied climate of Antananarivo and Ivato.

In the botanical garden, Serissa foetida is often used in borders, rock gardens, or shaped into bonsai. Its delicate appearance and prolific flowering make it a prized decorative species. Moreover, it fits seamlessly into the landscaped surroundings of nearby hotels and lodges, such as Hôtel Au Bois Vert.

Plant use

Serissa foetida, beyond its visual appeal, serves a range of practical and decorative purposes. In botanical gardens, it is often featured as a structural element in floral arrangements due to its compact shape and abundant blooming. One of the most popular uses of Serissa foetida is in the art of bonsai. Its small size and adaptability to pruning make it particularly well-suited to this form. Bonsai enthusiasts value its ability to produce flowers even in miniature pots, bringing both colour and vitality to their miniature landscapes. In hotels and restaurants—especially those located in and around Antananarivo and Ivato—Serissa foetida is used to create inviting and tranquil green spaces. Its profuse summer flowering is a draw for guests, creating a serene and pleasant atmosphere. It can be planted in clusters or as low hedging, offering a natural and attractive screen. Though it is less renowned for medicinal use, certain local traditions make use of Serissa foetida extracts to treat minor skin conditions. Nevertheless, its primary role remains ornamental, prized for its refined appearance and ease of care.
