Alpinia zerumbet, maraca en el jardín botánico Au Bois Vert

Alpinia zerumbet, also known as White Lavender, is a tropical ornamental plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Native to the warm regions of East Asia, it thrives in humid climates, where its large, glossy green leaves create a striking visual impact. This perennial herbaceous plant can grow impressively tall, reaching heights of around 2 to 3 metres, with upright stems reminiscent of bamboo. It is especially admired for its stunning pearly white flowers, often tinged with yellow and pink, which hang in long, delicate, and lightly scented clusters.

At the Au Bois Vert botanical garden, located near Ivato just a few kilometres from Antananarivo, this plant flourishes in an ideal environment. With its exotic appearance and lush foliage, it naturally draws the attention of visitors, providing a calming, picturesque display in a peaceful setting. Alpinia zerumbet, or White Lavender, is particularly valued in the landscaping of tropical hotels and lodges, helping to create cool, refreshing green spaces along pathways, terraces, and rest areas.

Its common name, “White Lavender”, comes from the pleasant fragrance released by its blossoms, especially during the warmer months. Beyond its decorative appeal, this plant also plays a role in supporting local biodiversity within the botanical garden by attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Plant use

Alpinia zerumbet is a versatile plant, valued not only for its ornamental beauty but also for its traditional uses. For centuries, its leaves and rhizomes have played a role in various Asian medicinal practices. The rhizome, rich in antioxidant compounds, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Local communities often prepare infusions using the leaves to aid digestion and help lower blood pressure. In a more contemporary setting, its broad, leathery leaves are also used to wrap food, gently infusing dishes with a delicate aroma during steaming. This traditional method of cooking remains popular in certain parts of Asia and the Indian Ocean region. Beyond its medicinal qualities, Alpinia zerumbet has become a popular decorative plant in tropical restaurants and lodges, particularly around Antananarivo. Whether planted in containers or directly in the ground, it brings a calming, exotic atmosphere to any space. It’s also an ideal choice for creating natural hedges, marking out pathways in the Au Bois Vert botanical garden while offering privacy to visitors. This low-maintenance plant thrives in suitable climates, tolerates heat well, and requires minimal watering once established—making it an eco-friendly favourite in many green spaces.
